The Eisele Vineyard has a long history, with evidence of Zinfandel and Riesling vines going back to the 1880s. The first Cabernet was planted in 1964 when Barbara and Milton Eisele purchased the vineyard. Eisele is just east of Calistoga on the lower slopes of the Palisades Mountains, which are an extension of the Vaca Mountains, in northern Napa Valley. Here the sun burns off the fog allowing excellent exposure during the day, while the night-time temperatures and cooling breezes coming from the Chalk Hill Gap allow the grapes to retain acidity. The soil is gravelly, deep, and well-drained, the dry climate and lack of vigor in the rocky soil producing small grapes that are naturally concentrated.

Eisele has always been a Grand Cru that consistently produces excellent wines, but the first time Eisele appeared on a label was the 1971 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele produced by Paul Draper. Following Ridge, Conn Creek produced a 1974 Eisele and from 1975 to 1991 Joseph Phelps produced his brilliant Eisele Cabernet Sauvignons. In 1990, Daphne and Bart Araujo purchased Eisele. The Araujo’s continued to make superb terroir-driven Cabernet Sauvignons, arguably elevating what was already an incredible terroir. In 2013, the Araujo’s sold the prized vineyard to the Pinault family from France, who also own Château Latour. To honor this legendary terroir, they named the wine they produced “Eisele Vineyard”.

Our excellent tasting will focus on the legendary wines of Phelps and Araujo, plus a rare addition of the 1990 Page Mill Eisele. If you are a lover of classic California Cabernet you won’t want to miss this important retrospective.
